Connecting an AS-Interface device in under 5 seconds? That’s exactly what several visitors to this year’s SPS in Nuremberg did.

Together with Bihl+Wiedemann, BizLink, Celpia, Getriebebau Nord, ifm electronic, Pepperl+Fuchs, Renesas, SEW-EURODRIVE, and Siemens, the AS-Interface organization once again showcased the solutions and possibilities of AS-Interface at SPS in Nuremberg this year.

Highlight: connection technology with AS-Interface. A key topic in many discussions was the ease of installation. That’s why we gave visitors the chance to try AS-Interface hands-on right at the booth. During our “connect-and-try” activity, visitors were able to mount modules with the yellow AS-Interface flat cable within just a few seconds — no stripping, no tools required.

The results were clear: the fastest participants came in under 5 seconds, and many others achieved similarly impressive times. Trying it directly on site made it very obvious how efficient and straightforward wiring with AS-Interface really is.

The joint presence proved its value once again. The combination of manufacturers, products, and a real-life application example gave many visitors a realistic impression of how quickly and reliably AS-Interface can be installed.

Looking at the leads we received, people came from as far as Switzerland and from all over the U.S. Almost everyone stopped to greet our little mascot, Robie, who demonstrated that you could save by using the cost-effective, easy-to-install, operate, and maintain AS-Interface technology.

Our team was as versatile and diverse as AS-Interface itself. We were joined by Bihl+Wiedemann, Celpia, ifm, and Pepperl+Fuchs. Especially during a time of changing directions, these companies showcased to visitors the importance of relying on easy and stable automation.

Innovation convinces: Over 55,000 visitors viewed our website www.as-interface.net in April. A clear sign that AS-Interface is in strong interest as a proven and future-oriented technology in the world of automation.

Whether simple wiring, reliable communication or modern automation applications - AS-Interface is future-proof.

All exhibitors at the Hannover Messe were unsure about the number of visitors before the show started - but we can still say that we had a successful trade fair. Despite the current difficult economic times and the ongoing cost-cutting measures, we are very satisfied with our participation.

The high number of international visitors that we were able to welcome to our joint booth with our co-exhibitors deserves special mention. We were able to make many new, valuable contacts and demonstrate the potential of AS-Interface technology and the advantages of simple connection technology.

We were once again able to confirm the importance of direct exchange at the trade show, and we look forward to the future opportunities that will arise from these discussions.

AS-Interface technology continues to evolve, offering new features for greater flexibility and interoperability. With the recent release of the ASi-5 Device Profiles Version 2.0 document, the AS-Interface system specification has been expanded.

While customizing a technology for specific needs can provide significant freedom, it often leads to incompatibility with other solutions. This is why specifications are essential - they create a standardized foundation that ensures cross-manufacturer functionality.

One of the key new features is the firmware update profile, which now enables cross-manufacturer firmware updates for connected devices via an AS-Interface network. This enhancement further extends the system’s functionality and improves efficiency in maintenance processes.

The AS-Interface test laboratory was subjected to an audit on January 30-31. Part of the audit was the examination of the methods and measuring equipment, as well as the monitoring of the references required in the “Traceability and Surveillance Procedure”.

The responsible laboratory engineers Tobias Rudloff and Jens Voigt, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Tilo Heimbold, demonstrated their expertise, and the audit by Tilman Schinke, AS-International Association, was completed successfully.

The AS-Interface laboratory has fulfilled the requirements and the accreditation will be extended by AS-International.

The AS-Interface website (www.as-interface.net) has recorded continuous growth in visitor numbers over the last half year. Compared to the same months in the previous year, the number of monthly visitors has risen steadily since August. While the increase in August was still moderate at just over +13% compared to the previous year, it reached an impressive +38% in December. This growth is particularly remarkable as seasonal drops are typical during the Christmas period.

Seasonal fluctuations are common for websites, unless there is a sustained positive trend. In view of the difficult economic situation, many automation specialists currently seem to be taking a closer look at the cost-saving potential of AS-Interface. This impression is supported by the increased readership of the AS-Interface magazine (https://magazin.as-interface.net/): In December 2023, the magazine recorded +112% more readers than in the same month of the previous year. This means that December was only behind the publication months of the biannual magazine.

AS-Interface's digital trade fair presence also benefited from this growing interest. At the end of the year, almost 50,000 people visited the AS-Interface Arena (https://arena.as-interface.net/), a remarkable success.

PACK EXPO International 2024 in Chicago was a trade fair of superlatives with 77,500 visitors and 2,700 exhibiting companies, an increase of 19% compared to the 2022 trade fair.

Many visitors to the AS-Interface stand were impressed by the benefits of the simple connection technology. It was a complete success for the co-exhibitors and the system.

Three exciting days at the SPS in Nuremberg are done. The SPS 2024 was a perfect opportunity to share knowledge, network and learn about new industry trends. We also took this opportunity to meet interesting people and companies, as well as discuss new partnerships and our innovations. We always look forward to meeting you in person and moving forward with new projects.

There is quiet after a big storm. Then everybody awakes, and there is great business. Fortunately, Orlando was not hit as hard by Hurricane Milton and its tornadoes as expected, and the FABTECH started as planned and was as busy as expected.

AS-Interface technology was one of only a few automation technologies introduced at the trade show. Among machine and tool manufacturers, we stood out for offering a simple automation technology with advantages, such as being economical, easy, and versatile, to which everyone who stopped by could relate. It was a great experience getting the workings of AS-Interface technology out to a relatively new pool of potential customers. 

As it enters its third year as an independent trade show, Automate 2024 continues to set new records. Its cutting-edge technology, a unique blend of information and entertainment, and its role as a unifying platform for all industries have earned it high praise. These distinctive features establish Automate 2024 as the go-to event for those in search of automation solutions. The numbers speak for themselves: With a staggering 850 exhibitors and a record-breaking 42,985 registrants, Automate 2024 was the largest show in history.

At this historic event held in Chicago, the ideally located AS-Interface booth attracted a significant number of visitors from the outset. For numerous attendees, our booth was their initial destination for discovering optimal automation solutions for their companies.

The allure of AS-Interface technology was profound, not just due to its user-friendly interface and cost-effectiveness but also because it stands as a standard, facilitating compatibility with devices from various AS-Interface manufacturers. Representatives from Bihl+Wiedemann, BizLink, and Pepperl+Fuchs showcased an extensive range of AS-Interface solutions. Asked about their thoughts concerning their participation in the AS-Interface booth at the Automate 2024, Marco Karthaus, Business Development Manager for North America at BizLink, remarked, "We engaged in numerous enriching discussions with both established and potential clients, along with companies we hadn't previously identified as potential clients." Michael McCabe, Product Manager at Pepperl+Fuchs, reflected, " I love learning about the vast array of customer obstacles and am surprised how often AS-Interface can help solve their problems. This was a very good show!"

"A LIGHTING TOWER OF INNOVATION AND INTERNATIONAL NETWORKING" is the headline of the Hannover Economic Development Agency for this year's Hannover Messe. This confirms the impression at the AS-Interface stand with many visitors from all over the world. 

Hannover Messe 2024 was a success for AS-Interface. In times of economic change, there is always increased cost pressure and therefore a high level of interest in automation solutions.  There was particularly strong interest at the trade fair in the cost benefits of using AS-Interface technology.

The distinctly international audience at the Hannover Messe had many interesting projects in which AS-Interface offers clear cost advantages. The partners at the AS-Interface joint booth experienced a positive atmosphere and are optimistic about the future.

The AS-Interface test laboratories must be verified regularly. From January 16 to 17, the AS-Interface test laboratory at the Research and Transfer Center of the HTWK in Leipzig was tested. The regular audit guarantees that all AS-Interface product certifications fully conform to the requirements of the specification. As part of this audit, methods and measuring equipment were examined in detail in accordance with the criteria of the Traceability and Surveillance Procedure.

Tilman Schinke from AS-International and the responsible laboratory engineers Tobias Rudloff and Jens Voigt successfully demonstrated the required tests, which means that the accreditation has been completed. The AS-Interface test laboratory in Leipzig, headed by Prof. Dr. Tilo Heimbold, has fulfilled all requirements and the accreditation will be extended by the AS-International Association.

On December 12, 2023, the general meeting of the AS-International Association was again held online. In addition to the annual review of 2023 and the planning for the coming year 2024, the agenda also included the regular elections of the Management Board.

This year's elections re-elected Jochen Bihl from Bihl+Wiedemann as Chairman of the Board, Bernd Kaiser from Siemens as Vice-Chairman and Frank Ebert from Pepperl+Fuchs as Head of the Technical Commission. Ralf Kämper from ifm was newly elected to the Board as Treasurer.

We would like to thank our long-standing treasurer Michael Strauss for many years of good and successful cooperation!

Overall, we look back at a successful year and are excited about this year's activities and events. The first highlight in 2024 will be the Hannover Messe!

The annual members assembly of the AS-International Association met on December 12, 2023. We thank all ASi members for the good cooperation in the past year.

In addition to the annual review of 2023 and planning for the upcoming year 2024, the agenda also included the regular elections of the Executive Board.

This year's elections confirmed Jochen Bihl (Bihl+Wiedemann GmbH) as Chairman of the Board, Bernd Kaiser (Siemens AG) as Vice-Chairman and Frank Ebert (Pepperl+Fuchs AG) as Head of the Technical Commission. Ralf Kämper (ifm electronic gmbh) was newly elected to the Board as Treasurer.

We are thankful for our long-standing treasurer Michael Strauss for the many years of good cooperation. Mr. Strauss is leaving the Board due to his well-deserved retirement. We wish him all the best for this new chapter in his life.

Overall, we look back on a successful year and are excited about the activities and events this year. The first highlight in 2024 for AS-International will be the Hannover Messe!

Reading these citations from PMMI, the Association for Packaging and Processing Technology, instills a certain pride that we were part of this show in Las Vegas. AS-Interface was joined by member companies Bihl+Wiedemann, Pepperl+Fuchs, and Valmet-StoneL. These three companies could not be any more different. Yet, they showed and explained how they can cover most customer requirements when designing an automation network. It impresses attendees when they discover that AS-Interface technology can be mixed and matched between different AS-Interface manufacturers, customizing the customer’s requirements perfectly.  

Always on the top of the advantages is the easiness and cost-effectiveness with which an AS-Interface automation network can be implemented in very different environments. This became transparent to the PACK EXPO attendees through the great variety of devices on the members’ panels and by explaining the significance of the AS-Interface two-conductor cable. It is easy to see that the wiring efforts can be significantly reduced by using a cable that leads power AND data as the foundation of an automation network.

Las Vegas will always be the city that never sleeps. It will always be glittery and exciting, a place to see at least once in a lifetime. However, as we could experience, the city also attracts many employees of industrial companies from all over Northern America to not only enjoy Las Vegas’ uniqueness but to soak up the innovations packaging and automation have to offer. It was amazing to be back in Las Vegas to talk about AS-Interface.

AS-Interface reported a growth of 35% in the first half of 2022. The increased demand affected the traffic on the booth at the SPS in Nuremberg. From November 8-10, the time in the exhibition hall was filled with intensive discussions. The simple, effective and above all cost-saving AS-Interface technology could convince and will now continue the growth with new users. New products and concrete solutions played a major role in many discussions. The exhibitors can be found in the AS-Interface Arena. 

With close to 45,000 registered attendees and almost 2,200 exhibitors, PACK EXPO International is one of North America's most significant automation and packaging trade shows. These numbers are just about where they were before Covid, and the show felt just like that: Booth visitors were highly interested and excited about the show and what we had to offer. Joined by Bihl+Wiedemann, Celpia, Pepperl+Fuchs, and Valmet, we could cover various aspects and application priorities for AS-Interface automation solutions.

As always, AS-Interface technology impressed many visitors when they first saw the two-conductor cable. A cable leading power and data parallelly is a considerable improvement for everyone who has ever wired a network. The reduction in wiring efforts has enormous advantages concerning costs as well as ease of installation. The member companies' experts, displaying at our booth, then provided interested potential customers with solutions for their specific automation needs. Here, looking at four very different AS-Interface providers, the mix-and-max aspect of the standardized AS-Interface technology became very transparent.

The IRSC is a conference that includes a one-day expo featuring automation companies. At the IRSC 2022, AS-Interface was joined by Bihl+Wiedemann and Pepperl+Fuchs. At the expo, we presented a display showing all the safety options AS-Interface offers. As always, our visitors to the tabletop presentation were impressed by the ease and versatility of the design, construction, and implementation of a safe AS-Interface network. We had a great time at the IRSC explaining AS-Interface technology, and so did our visitors. 

After the mandatory break from Covid, the trade shows start again.   After the successful shows in the past, we may finally present the AS-Interface on a trade show in China again. 

The stand in Shanghai focuses on functional safety and the presentation of the ASi-5 technology.

Especially functional safety is getting more and more attention in the Chinese market.

Finally Hannover Messe again after two years of pandemic break! For us it was clear that we would be there again and we are happy that we did it this year.

This year, 75,000 visitors and 2,500 exhibitors came to Hannover. Despite reduced exhibitors and noticeably less visitors than at the last Hannover Messe in 2019, we were positively surprised. Personal conversations, exciting contacts, new ideas and solutions accompanied us for four full days of the trade fair. Especially the share of international visitors rounded off a successful fair.

At our AS-Interface joint booth in hall 9, booth D06, visitors could inform themselves in personal conversations about the strong performance spectrum of ASi-5.

SPS Italia in Parma opened the trade show season for many automation experts in Europe. After the long Covid break, a positive atmosphere, open to change was experienced in Italy. AS-Interface manufacturers were present at the common booth from May 24-26, 2022.

Visitor interest at the AS-Interface booth was significantly higher than at the last show in 2019. Demand for AS-Interface technology has increased, but the new location in Hall 6, may also have played a part in this.

The total number of visitors to the 2022 show was 36,500, just below the record level of 2019.

AS-Interface is a cost-effective solution for collecting data in the field and making it available to host systems in the control cabinet or the cloud. In addition, the ASi-5 technology, with significantly increased performance, makes the system interesting for numerous new applications.

At the AS-Interface booth many conversations were about new projects with AS-Interface and the opportunities of the ASi-5 technology.

Everything under one roof. This is what we heard from attendees during the first two days of Automate 2022 in Detroit. The performance of ASi-5 enables an even wider range of applications which are now covered by AS-Interface.

Consequently, there is a great demand among component developers to get an insight into the technology. The AS-Interface organization has reacted to this demand by offering online trainings as well as a face-to-face seminar. From April 27th to 28th an ASi-5 developer seminar took place in Leipzig.

The participating product developers already had first product ideas in mind, correspondingly the questions to the speakers were concrete. Especially products that use the new diagnostic opportunities and the additional bandwidth are in great demand by the market.

At the end of the seminar, the participants got answers to their questions. They are now familiar with the technology. They know the opportunities of the system and they can begin now with an easy entry into product development.

The AS-Interface Academy is used more and more intensively. In January 100 new visitors had enrolled in the AS-Interface Academy. Today almost 3 months later already about 1000 participants have enrolled for the courses: "AS-Interface Technology" and "Introduction to ASi-5 Technology". The increase shows that there is a high interest in online trainings. The AS-Interface system reduces costs in all phases of an automated machine or plant. With the advantages in wiring, the savings effects are most noticeable in the installation and commissioning phases. Savings of 60% and more can be achieved in these phases.

The courses of the AS-Interface Academy teach the technical basics and background of the AS-Interface technology. With the courses of the academy, which can also be completed with a certificate, the participants receive information about: Transmission technology, functional scope, application possibilities and system components.

The courses offer both technicians and students an additional opportunity for further training in order to be able to use the advantages of the system. The increasing usage also shows that the advantages of the system are particularly attractive.

AS-Interface test laboratories are subject to a regular audit. From March 10-11 the AS-Interface laboratory in Leipzig was examined. In this audit methods and measuring equipment were checked according to strict criteria. The tests specified in the Traceability and Surveillance Procedure were monitored.

In addition to the scheduled standard tests, new reference devices were calibrated and are now available for future measuring equipment tests. The AS-Interface test laboratory in Leipzig passed all tests and the accreditation can now be extended by the AS-International Association.

On December 9, 2021, the members' assembly of the AS-International Association again took place virtually due to the Corona Pandemic. The agenda included the review of the year 2021 and the planning for the coming year 2022, as well as the regular elections of the board. These elections were held online for the first time with the help of a secure election tool.

In this year's elections, Jochen Bihl (Bihl+Wiedemann GmbH) was re-elected as chairman of the board, Dr. Markus Platen (Siemens AG) as vice chairman, and Michael Strauss (ifm electronic gmbh) as treasurer. Frank Ebert (Pepperl+Fuchs AG) was newly elected to the board as head of the technical commission.

We look back on a year with many challenges and interesting experiences. Also in 2021, many events could not take place as usual. Despite the characterizing year, we are pleased that the cooperation with our member companies - even at distance - worked very well.

We would like to thank the Board of Directors for their work over the past two years and look forward to the new year with confidence. To good cooperation!

At the end of December 2021 the annual members assembly of the AS-International Association took place online again. The members' assembly focused on a number of different issues - from the review of the year 2021 to the planned activities for the year 2022. A new board of directors was also elected.

After a long break, Pack Expo was the first show we attended again. We wanted to use this chance not only to present our products and solutions but also to give something positive back Freshly printed, we took the opportunity to present our new ASi-5 Compendium at Pack Expo in Las Vegas and do something good. We decided to support the Sunshine Kids, an organization that helps children with cancer. Interested trade show attendees were able to make a donation and received the brand-new ASi-5 compendium in return. Thanks to the generous donations, we were able to write out a $1,000 check to the Sunshine Kids.  

PACK EXPO Las Vegas was one of the first industrial trade shows after a long break due to Covid-19. It was exciting for everyone to talk to other people working in our field of expertise.

Safety precautions have been kept through daily self-assessments and through masks to be worn at all times during the show. Obviously, the AS-Interface Organization, joint by member companies Bihl+Wiedemann and Pepperl+Fuchs, did not know what to expect. The event turned out to positively surprise in every aspect: The show and our booth was busier than in the years before, with attendees truly interested in automation and AS-Interface technology. Many exciting conversations about sensors and controls were lead, resulting in an impressive number of promising leads for the participating companies. Attendees stopping at our booth were highly impressed with the technology and in positions to make decisions concerning their needs in automation. All in all, the show was a true surprise to all of us, and a great success for everyone participating.

As we are starting to plan the PACK EXPO 2022 in Chicago on October 23-26, we already envision a much larger presence at a prime location. Include us in your plans for 2022.
