OverviewAS-i Safety componentsSafe sensor and actuator components are the basis of a safe AS-Interface system. To ensure wide use and availability of the system, all members of the AS-International Association are free to manufacture a safety AS-Interface component. To ensure functionality of the system, so-called code tables must be obtained from the consortium. Use of the code tables as well as any relevant patents is controlled through licensing agreements with the consortium. Type approval from TÜV or BIA is the responsibility of the manufacturer, and offers together with the AS-Interface certification an essential sales argument for a recognized safe system. MembershipThe AS-Interface Safety at Work consortium welcomes new members. The work of the AS-Interface Safety at Work consortium includes market assistance and expansion of the technology. In addition to the common marketing platform, membership in the consortium offers the benefit of being able to manufacture safety monitors. The consortiumThe AS-Interface Safety at Work Consortium was founded in 1999 to develop the economic advantages of using the AS-Interface cabling for safety-related components as well. The objectives of the consortium are assistance in the marketplace and the technological development of the Safety at Work system. The transmission reliability of the AS-Interface, even under critical environmental conditions, made it possible to integrate safety components using the Safety at Work technology. Complex parallel wiring of safety components has been replaced by the Safety at Work system and integrated into the existing AS-Interface system. This means it is now possible to implement wiring of safety components with the AS-Interface in addition to the sensor/actuator cabling. The cost benefits are obvious:
- Reduction in installation costs
- Reduction in control cabinet space required
- Increased system flexibility
- Fault prevention, etc.
In order to enhance the potential of the standardized (EN 50295 and IEC 62026-2) AS-Interface system, development work made sure that the Safety at Work technology is easy to integrate into existing AS-Interface systems. Since TÜV and BIA approvals were granted in May of 2000, the user can be assured that AS-Interface Safety at Work represents a certified and recognized safe system. The members of the Safety consortium are:
